Utility Tool Battle Axe Review on Everydaycommentary.com

Battle Axe from Everyday Commentary Review

Our 1095 “Battle Axe” version of the UTK0200 8″ Field knife has received a glowing review from everydaycommentary.com:

There is simply no question here–compared to the other choppers I have reviewed (which includes the Cold Steel Recon Scout, the Ontario RD-7, and the BK-9), the Battle Axe possesses a level of finish that few choppers have… the Battle Axe is on a different level from the rest of the choppers I have tested.

The simple shape of this knife, coupled with a damn fine level of finish, makes the Battle Axe a joy to use.

The blade stock is monstrously thick, between 3/16 and 1/4 of an inch. The handle scales are really locked in. And the coating, which is leagues better than the coating on the chooppers one price tier down, was incredibly tough.

I am confident that the Battle Axe will handle anything you throw at it. Here is why–when splitting and then batonning that piece of red oak shown above, the knife got imbedded in the wood. I am probably not too dissimilar from you are in this regard and I took this as a challenge from Mother Nature. Instead of doing the wiggle maneuver to get the knife out I proceeded to beat the ever living shit out of it hoping it would plow on through. My batonning stick, a double wrist thick piece of oak broke in the process. I think switched over to an old shovel handle that I use in really stubborn instances (when I broke the shovel handle I cut it up for other uses, such as this). I then broke that piece of wood. It was only then that I decided to pull the knife out instead of pushing it through. After some serious and sweaty work I got it free. Honestly I pulled it out expect the Battle Axe to be twisted or irreparably damaged. But it was perfectly fine, so undamaged that I have to consult the picture to figure out which of the two review samples it was. Not even the coating shows significant wear.

Again this is a place where the extra cost makes a difference. None of the cheaper choppers would have faired that well and every other chopper I have used that had coating would have shown noticeable wear. This is a beast of knife and short of purposeful abuse aimed at destroying the knife, I think it will handle whatever you dish out.

A Glowing Testimonial

The following is an e-mail to a Utility Tool dealer (IM Outfitters in Michigan) from a customer in Alaska who purchased a UTK0110 Wilderness Knife.

Hey Chuck and Darren: Just a note to you about the knife I bought from you guys.

I KNOW what a GOOD knife is….I have been a wilderness guide in Ak. for over 20yrs. This knife does the job better than any knife I have ever owned and I am kind of knife nut and own maybe 50 plus knives.

In April after our winter guiding season my wife and I took a trip to Utah for 2 weeks rafting and hiking into the Anasazi cliff dwellers areas. Due to weight and airline restrictions we went very light. Did not even have a hatchet..but I did have the Utility Tool knife with the 41/2 blade. I used that to spit firewood by placing the blade on a piece of wood and pounding the crap out of the tip of the knife with a heavy stick to split wood…used it a hundred times even to open food containers…in the winter the sheath fits perfect on the outside of my bibs for quick easy access even with gloves on. I think it might take a few years to wear this out even the way I use a knife or I LOSE it before then…but when I need another knife I will be getting back with you.

When we have clients send us comments like this we appreciate it….figured you would too.

Please pass this on to the guy at Utility Tool that makes the knife..I forgot his name…and also…the sheath is critical to the way I use a knife…lots of times I need the knife using only one hand….perfect QUALITY sheath too…don’t you guys quit making this product..I am seeing copy cats out there right now….advertise this is the original…(if it is).

This hand ground (by Alan Warren) knife is 1095 HCS (stamp marked on top of spine) with a prototype Cocobolo handle set with a cross-hatch pattern on the sides. This particular design had a deeper blade and was ground with a thicker edge and resulting in a knife that weighed 2 ounces more that the current design. Only ten were hand made in this batch, making it a rare tool.

This particular knife was teamed up with a Spec Ops Brand Combat Master sheath in MultiCam Nylon- shown here attached to the owner’s MultiCam pack.

Owner said that this picture shows the results of cutting a “…free standing thick branch and it went right through it.” He added that he is “Starting to realize it's potential.” If you look close you can see the markingson the top of the blade.
